Getting Fitted for My Golf Game

As an avid golfer playing off a 18 handicap, I’ve struggled for years trying to find the right set of irons for my game. I’ve tried all sorts of game improvement and super game improvement irons from the major brands, but could never get the consistency I was looking for.

This season, I decided it was time to get properly fitted for a custom set of irons built specifically for my swing type, angle of attack and swing speed. After doing some research online into custom club fitting options, I came across Maltby Golf’s TS2 irons. I read some excellent reviews about their custom fitting process and quality forged irons. The fully customizable options were also a big plus!

Understanding My Needs

Before starting the fitting process, I wanted to understand exactly what I needed from my irons:

  • Forgiveness on mishits
  • Solid feedback and feel
  • Good distance with consistent gapping
  • Trajectory control for hitting different types of shots
  • Workability to shape shots when needed

As a mid-to-high handicapper, forgiveness and playability were critical, but I also wanted irons that I could grow into as my consistency and ball striking improves. The Maltby TS2 seemed to fit the bill!

Researching My Options

I did extensive research before deciding on the Maltby TS2 irons, comparing them to similar game improvement irons like the Titleist AP1, Ping G410, Callaway Mavrik and TaylorMade SIM Max. Here were some of the key things that stood out to me about the TS2 irons:

Performance:

  • High launch and ball speeds from the forged S20C stainless steel heads
  • Progressive offset and sole width to optimize launch and playability
  • Extra forgiveness on mishits while providing solid feel and feedback

Custom Fitting & Building:

  • Fully customizable options including lofts, lies, grips, shafts and swing weight
  • Ability to perfectly match specs to my swing for optimal performance
  • Cost savings compared to big brand custom fitting

Reviews & Feedback:

  • Highly rated across forums and reviews for playability and forgiveness
  • Great feedback from mid to high handicap and developing players
  • Excellent value irons to help improve consistency and shot making

The TS2 checked all the boxes for me as a developing player looking to improve. I was ready to get fit!

Getting the Right Fit

After deciding the Maltby TS2 was the right iron for my game, I booked a fitting session with a Maltby certified fitter to help analyze my swing and define the optimal custom specs for my set.

The 60 minute fitting was detailed, educational and fascinating! Here were the key components:

Swing Analysis:

Using high speed cameras and attack angle measurements, he captured critical data like my club head speed, angle of attack, typical miss direction and spin rates. This formed the foundation for the fitting recommendations.

Club Testing:

I hit multiple shots with different TS2 iron configurations testing various shafts, lofts, lies and swing weights to understand what delivered the best ball flight, distance and consistency.

Recommendations & Specs:

Based on the data captured and clubs tested, he provided finely tuned recommendations on lofts, lies, shafts, grips and swing weight to optimize my launch, shot shape and forgiveness.

I walked away extremely confident that the specs would deliver peak performance and consistency!

Building My Custom Set

One of the best parts of the Maltby TS2 irons is the ability to fully customize and build your set to your exact specs for about the same cost as off-the-shelf irons.

After receiving my detailed fitting report, I logged in online to Maltby’s component shop and built my perfect set:

  • Irons: 6-PW TS2 Iron Heads with KBS Tour Stiff Steel Shafts
  • Lofts/Lies: Adjusted based on fitter recommendations
  • Grips: Midsize GolfPride Tour Velvet Align
  • Swing Weight: D2
  • Overall Cost: $629 including custom building charges

The component selection process was seamless, and I had my perfect set built and shipped out in about 1 week. The buying experience was fantastic from start to finish.

Putting Them to the Test

I couldn’t wait for my new irons to arrive after going through the in-depth fitting and building process. The custom set arrived well packed and as beautiful looking clubs as I’ve ever owned. I eagerly took them right to the range to test them out.

To say I was blown away would be an understatement! The combination of proper gapping, ideal flight and forgiveness was better than I could have imagined.

The key benefits I immediately noticed:

  • High launching and very long without feeling uncontrollable
  • Excellent distance gapping and trajectory control
  • Great feel and responsiveness through the turf and at impact
  • Significantly improved forgiveness and straight shooting
  • Dialed in performance matching my swing out of the box

After one range session, I felt more confident and consistent than I’ve felt with any other irons.. I couldn’t wait to get them on the course!

Off the Deck – Wow!

Taking the TS2 irons to the course is when it all clicked for me. The turf interaction, solidness at impact and penetrating ball flight was fantastic even from tight lies. And when I didn’t quite flush one, the forgiveness surprised me with better-than-expected results.

I found myself hitting mid to long irons closer and more accurately than ever before. And the feel and distance control gave me confidence going after more pins.

Here were some of my favorite TS2 iron highlights from my first range session:

  • Pure 7-iron – Flushed a 7-iron 178 yards to 12 feet rolling just like a tour pro shot! Felt incredible.
  • Long Par 4 – Reached fringe of a 430 yard par 4 with a solid 5-iron instead of hybrid/wood.
  • Tough Pin – Stuck a back right tucked pin using a smooth mid trajectory 8-iron. Perfect shape and distance!

As you can probably tell, I absolutely love my new TS2 irons and highly recommend Maltby’s custom fitting and building process to find your ideal set! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve received a lot of questions from my fellow golf buddies recently asking for my take on these awesome TS2 irons after seeing them in my bag. Here are some of the key FAQs with my answers:

Q – Are Maltby irons as good as the big brands?

Without question! Given Maltby’s direct to consumer business model with no retail margins built in, you actually get better quality and performance per dollar than the big brands. I firmly believe my TS2s would cost $1,300+ as a custom fit set from one of the other OEMs. And the quality would be equal if not better than their game improvement offering. Maltby irons are seriously legit!

Q – Can high handicappers play the TS2 irons?

Absolutely! The TS2 slots right in the middle of Maltby’s GI iron offerings making them perfect for higher handicap players looking to develop their iron play. The key words that come to mind are forgiveness, playability shot shaping ability. You can grow your skills over time with the TS2 irons. Maltby also makes the TS3 as a max game improvement iron if you want that elevated forgiveness and offset in a big cavity back design.

Q – What Maltby irons compare to the major brands best sellers?

From everything I’ve seen and tested, here is how I would compare them:

  • TS3 = Taylormade SIM Max OS, Ping G410 SFT
  • TS2 = Titleist AP1, Callaway Mavrik, Taylormade SIM Max
  • PSi = Titleist T300, Srixon ZX5, Callaway Apex

The Maltby irons lineup has models to match anything from your game improvement irons to tour level precision forged muscle backs. You can’t go wrong with their options!
